Here’s how to make sure you don’t lose your bikini body to winter hibernation this year…

There is an annual cycle in dieting that we are all aware of. We work hard through summer so we can go to the beach without feeling embarrassed, and then as soon as it begins to get cold we seemingly magically begin to gain weight.

While there is an evolutionary explanation for part of this phenomenon – our brain wants to protect us from freezing, and fat helps keep us warm – much of the added weight has to do with subtle changes in our eating habits when winter sets in.

Here are 5 tips to help you continue your summer weight loss in the cold months.

1. Keep your morning routine the same

Try to wake up at the same time as you did in summer, and eat and drink the same things. If you were in the habit of drinking a tall glass of water when you get out of bed, keep doing that.

If you absolutely can’t stomach whatever breakfast you were eating, make sure you replace it with something similar in terms of caloric load and macronutrient content. Don’t swap a fruit and protein smoothie for flapjacks and syrup.

2. Keep your liquid intake high… BUT…

In winter many people will stop drinking water because it’s cold and drink tea or coffee instead. The problem with this is that water doesn’t have milk and sugar in it, so it’s not a fair swap. If you’re going to drink more hot drinks in winter then they need to be unsweetened and dairy-free.

If you insist on sweetening your tea, coffee and hot chocolate you need to count these drinks as one of your three meals for the day – this is probably how many extra calories you’re drinking.

3. Don’t allow yourself to get bored

Winter is a time of comfort food. And the best time to be tempted to eat that bag of crisps and a slab of chocolate is when you’re sitting around by yourself with nothing to do.

If you can keep yourself occupied you have a much better chance of not succumbing to unnecessary cravings.

4. Keep eating veggies and fruit to ward off sickness

Most of us just accept that at least once per year we will get the flu or some such virus which sends us to bed for a few days.

If you want to avoid being sick and all the negative repercussions that go with it you MUST keep eating as much vegetables and fruit as you can – aim for 5 servings of veg and 3 of fruit per day.

You will get the vitamins and minerals you need to help your body fight infection and sickness and have a healthy winter.

5. Cook hearty healthy winter meals in bulk

Great-tasting winter foods don’t have to be unhealthy. Plus there are so many hearty meals you can cook in bulk in a slow cooker or pressure cooker (in our house we use both simultaneously sometimes and make two week’s worth of dinners at once).

Stews, soups, casseroles, curries, paella… The list goes on. The gist of it? Load a pot with vegetables and meat, add some liquid and cook. You can’t go wrong.
